Tony Coon Films

New Jersey based Cinematographer, Tony Coon, films projects for clients ranging from local companies, to motocross, weddings, and more. As he does so, he relies on Core SWX battery packs and the EVO battery backup to power his RED DSMC2 camera. He caught our attention by tagging us in BTS photos on Instagram, which naturally led us to reaching out to learn more about his story and what he’s been up to.

1. Tell us about yourself and how you got your start in the industry.

I started filming skateboarding tricks with my friends back when I got my first Mini HDV tape camera and basically haven’t put a camera down since. What started as a hobby turned into a full time career once I learned to shoot weddings while working for Ann Coen Photography. Then in 2017, I was in a motorcycle accident that claimed my right eye. The only way I saw forward (pun intended) was to put my head down and hone my craft of cinematography, full time.

2. What advice would you give to an aspiring cinematographer?

I would advise aspiring cinematographers to never stop shooting. Always search for inspiration in every aspect of your life.  If you travel, bring whatever camera equipment you can fit. Never stop learning, whether it’s about your equipment, lighting, or the business side of your art form. There is endless knowledge to gain and you should always seek constant improvement in your craft.

3. What was one of your favorite projects you’ve worked on and why?

One of my favorite projects I worked on was my short film, “Wide Open,”last year. It’s the true story of Dan Callahan, a Pro Motocross rider who suffered a knee injury and the loss of his brother to a motorcycle accident. When Dan began to rebuild, he focused on his true passion and Callahan Motocross School was born. There he coaches kids on all the fundamentals of motocross and inspires them the way that his brother inspired him.  We connected very closely with this project as we were both affected so intensely from motorcycle accidents. It was a true honor to be able to direct, shoot and edit this project. One I will never forget.

4. What Core SWX products do you use and how are they beneficial to your productions?

My favorite Core SWX products are the Hypercore Mini batteries teamed with the EVO. It’s a dream to be able to swap out batteries with more than enough time in between without having to power off and on during shoots. The screen on the back of the batteries and on the EVO couldn’t be more accurate regarding their battery life. The connection between camera and battery has been flawless thus far.

5. Although we’re still in this in-between of coming out of quarantine, do you have any upcoming projects you’d like us to watch out for?

During quarantine I’ve been working with a surf clothing company called Jetty on a short video series about their new product called Oystex. This product is made from recycled plastic and oyster shells. Both are ground up and combined to turn into a super soft and durable fabric. Definitely a fun and creative one to be a part of because it mixes ecological sustainability with my local community!
